<image:caption>1) you have the outer bark, the hard crusty protective layer; (2) the cambium, which is only one or a few cells thick and despite its thinness, is where growth occurs in a tree. When the springtime hormonal signal hits, the cells in the cambium layer begin dividing rapidly every week or so. When a cambial cell divides, one of the new cells becomes inner bark or phloem, and the other becomes; (3) sapwood or xylem. While that rapid dividing occurs in the cambium, the bark is "loose"; the new cells are thin-walled, shorter, and weaker. Next is the sapwood, xylem, the upward transport of moisture and growth signaling chemicals, then the (4) the inner bark (the phloem), the downward sugar transport lane from leaves to roots and energy or storage, is around 1/16"-1/8" thick, sticky/slippery, and full of sweet bug food and is the layer that will give you trouble draw-knifing /debarking as your logs dry; (5) heartwood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Eric Lassotovitch - Co-Founder, Polecraft Solutions Eric is a licensed building contractor in Northern California. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from California College Arts and Crafts, Oakland, CA. He innovates efficient pole frame crafting solutions, and draws plans for clients. The appeal of using the small diameter trees that currently need to be thinned from many tracts of forests in Mendocino County has inspired him to use his drawing skills to manifest new tools and techniques for a unique approach to round-pole timber framing. Energy efficiency, affordability, healthy homes, and appropriate usage of local materials are among his top design considerations. Eric is co-founder, with Colin Gilespi, of Polecraft Solutions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Govinda Dalton - Founder, Spirit Resistance Radio; Board Member: Cloud Forest Institute Govinda has been thinning small diameter trees on his forestland and using the round poles to build lodges and other meaningful structures for over 20 years. The catastrophic fire that tore through Mendocino County in 2008 skirted or moved right through the thinned forestland he’s been tending with little damage to tree stands. Govinda is the Media Technician and founder of Spirit Resistance Radio. He is on the International Indian Treaty Council, is part of the Indigenous Environmental Network, the Western Shoshone Defense League; and has held a key role in forest preservation activism. Govinda is also on the Board of Directors of Cloud Forest Institute.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Matilda Hernandez-Miyares - FRG Hop organizer & Seed farmer Matilda, a FRG member since 2021, is driven by the dream of reciprocity, to live aligned with their local forest and communities. After moving to Mendocino county in 2016, she fell in love with being in the woods and all the mindset shifts that come with living off-grid and outnumbered by nature. She has been able to pursue many interests with a general theme of living gently, and in reciprocity. These explorations include: forest tending, reintroduction of good fire and biochar production, natural building, permaculture design and perennial agriculture, mushroom cultivation, Soil Food Web & using a microscope to access microbial communities. Matilda also works as a farmer at Field of Dreams, a community seed farm in Caspar, CA.</image:caption>
